Things you can't miss in The Hague

Den Haag was voor mij tot voor kort een nog onontdekte parel. Deze stad aan de Nederlandse kust heeft nochtans meer dan genoeg redenen om op ieders bucket list te schitteren. Moderne, torenhoge gebouwen steken af tegen de schilderachtige grachten en je loopt er zo van het ene top museum naar het volgende gezellige binnenplein. Tik leuke vintage items op de kop terwijl je langs de gezellige bars wandelt en laat je verrassen door de multiculturele invloeden die doorheen de Zuid-Hollandse stad voelbaar zijn. Hier lees je wat ik gedaan en gegeten heb tijdens mijn tweedaagse naar Den Haag.

English: The Hague was still an undiscovered gem to me. However, this city at the Dutch coast has plenty of reasons to be on everyone's bucket list. Modern, tall buildings rise in the background of the picturesque canals and you easily walk from one famous museum to another beautiful courtyard. Score unique vintage items while walking past cozy bars and let the multicultural influences in this South Holland city take you by surprise. Read here what I did and ate during my two-day trip to The Hague.

Art and history in 'Centrum'

Den Haag bestaat uit een heleboel buurten of kwartieren die allemaal hun eigenheid hebben. Tijdens mijn tripje naar Den Haag heb ik vooral tijd doorgebracht in de wijken Centrum, Zeeheldenkwartier en Scheveningen.

In het Centrum vind je de oude stad van Den Haag terug. Je kunt er de hele dag gaan winkelen, je vindt er de belangrijkste musea terug en wordt helemaal ondergedompeld in de Nederlandse politieke geschiedenis. In het Binnenhof, een verzameling van middeleeuwse gebouwen, wordt al eeuwenlang aan politiek gedaan. Tot op vandaag zijn onder andere de Eerste en Tweede kamer er gevestigd en vinden de vergaderingen van de Raad van State en de Ministerraad er plaats. Opvallend is dat dit bestuurscentrum zich niet in de hoofdstad Amsterdam bevindt. Verder vind je er historisch belangrijke elementen zoals het Torentje en de Ridderzaal terug, net als de prachtige fontein die centraal staat te pronken. De Hofvijver die naast het Binnenhof gelegen is, is evengoed een bezoekje waard. Van hieruit heb je het mooiste uitzicht over de oude en nieuwe delen van de stad. Extra vroeg opstaan om de zonsopgang vanaf te zien is een ideale manier om je dag te starten!

The Hague exists out of many different districts or quarters that all have their own identity. During my trip to The Hague I spend my time around the neighbourhoods of Centrum, Zeeheldenquarter and Scheveningen.

In the Centrum you will find the old city of The Hague. Here you can shop till you drop, visit the most important museums and get soaked in the rich Dutch political history. In the Inner Court (Binnenhof), a complex of Medieval buildings, politics have been prominent since many centuries. Until today both the Senate and the House of Representatives sit on the site and the meetings of the States General of the Netherlands and the Ministry of General Affairs still take place in the chambers of the Inner Court. It is remarkable this Parliament building is located here and not in the capital, Amsterdam. On the site you will see historical elements such as the Little Tower (Torentje), the Knight's Hall (Ridderzaal) and the beautiful fountain that stands out in the center of the square. The Hofvijver next to the Inner Court is as well worth a visit. From here you have a breathtaking view upon the old and new parts of the city. Get up early enough if you want to see the sun rising from this point. It will be worth it!

Naast het Binnenhof en de Hofvijver ligt het Mauritshuis, hét museum waar je de grootste Nederlandse meesterwerken uit de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw kan bewonderen. Dit museum hangt tjokvol werken van de hand van onder meer Rembrandt Van Rijn, Johannes Vermeer en Peter Paul Rubens. Laat je verbazen door topwerken uit de Gouden Eeuw en spot het uithangbord van het Mauritshuis: Meisje met de parel. Op wandelafstand vind je Escher in het Paleis, waar je terecht komt in de onwerkelijke werkelijkheid van M. C. Escher. Deze kunstenaar staat bekend om zijn etsen en illustraties van eeuwigdurende kringlopen, water dat naar boven stroomt en realisme met een twist. Laat je meenemen doorheen zijn levensverhaal waar vogels in vissen veranderen en niets is wat het lijkt. In de zalen van het Paleis hangen verder ook 15 prachtige kroonluchters van de kunstenaar Hans van Bentem.

Wandel van hier uit naar het Koninklijke Noordeinde Paleis en via de straat Noordeinde naar het Zeeheldenkwartier voor nog meer kunst. In deze straat vind je echt de ene kunstgalerij na de andere. Zo leuk!

Next to the Inner Court and the Hofvijfer is the Mauritshuis. This is the place to be to see some of the Dutch master pieces from the seventeenth and eighteenth century in all their greatness. The museum in chock-full of works painted by masters as Rembrandt Van Rijn, Johannes Vermeer and Peter Paul Rubens. Get blown away by top works from the Golden age and spot the most famous piece of the Mauritshuis: Girl with the pearl earring. Within walking distance you'll find Escher in the Palace, where you are invited into the world of M. C. Escher's unrealistic reality. This artist is known for his etchings and illustrations of everlasting cycles, water that flows upwards and realism with a twist. Let his art take you through his life story where birds change into fish and nothing is what it seems. In the rooms of the Palace there are also 15 original chandeliers of the artist Hand van Benthem.

Walk from here to the royal Noordeinde Palace and further along the street Noordeinde to the Zeeheldenkwartier for even more art. In this street you will really find one art gallery after another. So cool!

Authenticity in the Zeeheldenquarter

Het Zeeheldenkwartier is een echte volksbuurt. Het is er op het eerste zicht heel gewoon. Maar achter bijna elk huisje schuilt er weer een volgende tweedehandszaak of hippe koffietent, de één nog gezelliger dan de andere. Hier moet je zijn als je graag snuistert tussen schatten uit lang vervlogen tijden of gewoon even op zoek bent naar dat gevoel van authenticiteit. Naast de vele vintagezaakjes, kom je er onder andere ook toffe lunchplekken en designwinkels tegen.

Op vlak van eten vind je hier tal van lokale en minder lokale lekkerheden en ben je in deze buurt zo'n beetje in het vegan mekka van Den Haag. Zelf ben ik heerlijk gaan ontbijten bij Fast & Vegan en heb in de avond echt genoten van mijn diner bij Hummus. De mensen zijn in beide zaken giga vriendelijk waardoor je je meteen thuis zal voelen. Verder stonden Plenty, FOAM en Love & Peas ook nog tussen mijn vegan eetadresjes, maar deze zaken waren helaas gesloten tijdens de kerstvakantie. Ik heb deze dus nog niet kunnen uittesten maar ze zien er alleszins super uit. Zo weet ik alvast waar ik de volgende keer ook nog moet gaan proeven!

The Zeeheldenquarter is a true working-class neighbourhood. At first it looks like any regular district. But you will see how behind every door there's another secondhand shop or hip coffeeshop waiting for you, one even cozier than the other. This is where you need to go if you love browsing among treasures of days long gone or if you are looking for that feeling of authenticity. Beside the vintageshops you will also discover cool lunchspots and designstores in these streets.

Prepare yourself to taste heavenly local and not so local food in this vegan mekka of The Hague. I enjoyed some delicious breakfast at Fast & Vegan and ate at Hummus in the evening for a yummie diner. The people are sooo friendly in both places so you will feel at home in an instant. The following places were also on my vegan-foodie-list but were closed during my stay: Plenty, FOAM and Love & Peas. I couldn't try them out but they look really good and I will remind them for my next visit!

Beach hair and salty air in Scheveningen

Als je mij een beetje kent weet je dat ik een rasechte zeeliefhebber ben. Dus het feit dat Den Haag zo dicht bij de zee ligt, doet mij nog meer verliefd worden op deze stad. Met de tram sta je vanuit het stadscentrum op zo'n 15 minuutjes aan de bekende pier van Scheveningen. Van hieruit kun je wandelen langs de zeedijk richting de gezellige vissershaven, recht 'de zee ingaan' over de pier of met de tenen in het zand lekker uitblazen. De golven vallen in de smaak bij zowel beginnende als meer ervaren surfers en voor wie het graag droog houdt, kan je het winkelcentrum intrekken of voor een ritje op het reuzenrad gaan. Aan de ingang van de overdekte pier verkopen ze trouwens ook heerlijke (niet vegan) verse stroopwafels! Perfect om de eerste honger te stillen of gewoon even van deze lekkere lokale specialiteit te genieten. Het onderhoud en de invulling van de pier kunnen best wel beter, maar als je hier over kunt kijken, is het een zalige wandeling over de golven.

If you know me you will also know that I am a first class sea lover. So the fact that The Hague is so close to the sea makes me love this city even more. Take the tram from the center of the city to arrive at the famous pier of Scheveningen in about 15 minutes. From here you can walk along the seawall to the fishermen's harbour, right 'into the sea' on the pier or with your toes in the sand while you enjoy the sea breeze. The waves are love by both rookies as pro surfers. If you rather keep things dry you can take a look in the shopping mall or go for a ride on the ferries wheel. At the entrance of the covered pier they also sell delicious (not vegan) fresh 'stroopwafels'! Perfect as a snack in between or to taste and enjoy this local specialty. The maintenance and facilities at the pier could be better but if you can ignore these a bit, it makes the perfect walk above the waves.

Ik hoop in de nabije toekomst nog eens tot in Den Haag te raken zodat ik nog meer tips aan deze lijst kan toevoegen. Bij een volgend bezoek plan ik alvast om een kijkje te nemen in zowel het Vredespaleis als het Kunstmuseum. Heb jij nog leuke tips voor mij? Laat het mij weten!
